Paella
Description:
Paella is a traditional Spanish dish originating from Valencia, combining rice with a variety of seafood, meat, and vegetables. Known for its vibrant colors and rich flavors, the dish is cooked in a single pan, allowing all the ingredients to meld together into a satisfying, aromatic feast. Whether made with seafood, chicken, or a mix of both, paella is perfect for sharing and celebrating.
Ingredients:
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 onion, chopped
- 1 bell pepper, chopped
- 2 cloves garlic, minced
- 1 1/2 cups short-grain rice (like Arborio)
- 3 cups chicken or seafood broth
- 1 teaspoon saffron threads (optional)
- 1 teaspoon paprika
- 1/2 teaspoon turmeric (for color)
- 1 cup tomatoes, chopped
- 1/2 cup frozen peas
- 1/2 pound chicken thighs, boneless and cut into pieces (optional)
- 1/2 pound shrimp, peeled and deveined
- 1/2 pound mussels or clams (optional)
- 1 lemon, cut into wedges
- Fresh parsley, chopped (for garnish)
Instructions:
1. Prepare the Base:
- Heat olive oil in a large paella pan or skillet over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, bell pepper, and garlic. Sautรฉ for 5-7 minutes until softened.
- Stir in the rice, allowing it to toast for 1-2 minutes, then add the chopped tomatoes and cook for another 3-4 minutes.
2. Add Broth and Seasonings:
- Pour in the broth, add the saffron, paprika, and turmeric. Bring to a simmer, stirring occasionally.
- Let the rice cook, uncovered, for about 10 minutes, without stirring, so the bottom layer starts to form a crust.
3. Add Proteins and Vegetables:
- Add the chicken pieces (if using), shrimp, mussels, and peas to the pan. Arrange the seafood on top of the rice and let it cook for an additional 10-15 minutes, or until the seafood is cooked through and the rice is tender.
4. Finishing Touches:
- Once the liquid has been absorbed and the rice is cooked, remove the pan from the heat. Cover with a clean kitchen towel and let it rest for 5 minutes.
5. Serve:
- Garnish with fresh parsley and lemon wedges before serving. Enjoy your delicious, colorful paella!
Tips:
- For the best flavor, use a mix of seafood, chicken, and/or rabbit for an authentic paella.
- If you donโt have saffron, turmeric can be a good substitute to add color.
- Paella can be made ahead and tastes even better the next day!
