Tiramisu is a beloved Italian dessert that layers espresso-soaked ladyfingers with a rich, smooth mascarpone blend. Its name, meaning ยซย pick me upย ยป in Italian, refers to the energizing combination of coffee and cocoa. Tiramisu is not only delicious but also simple to prepare, making it a favorite for both home cooks and professional chefs.

Ingredients:

  • 6 large egg yolks
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 cup mascarpone cheese
  • 1 1/2 cups heavy cream
  • 2 cups brewed espresso or strong coffee, cooled
  • 1/4 cup coffee liqueur (optional)
  • 2 packs ladyfingers (savoiardi)
  • Unsweetened cocoa powder for dusting

How to Cook:

  1. Whisk egg yolks and sugar until pale. Add mascarpone and mix until smooth.
  2. In another bowl, whip heavy cream to stiff peaks and fold it into the mascarpone mixture.
  3. Mix the coffee and liqueur (if using). Quickly dip ladyfingers into the coffee mixture, then layer them in a dish.
  4. Spread half the mascarpone mixture over the ladyfingers. Repeat the layers.
  5. Chill for 4 hours or overnight. Dust with cocoa powder before serving.

History:

Tiramisu originated in the Veneto region of Italy in the 1960s, with several towns claiming its creation. The dessert became internationally famous in the 1980s. Though variations exist, the traditional version remains a symbol of Italian culinary tradition.
